A Few Basics to know About Thermal Insulation

Thermal Insulation

For every home in Slovakia, it is important to have proper thermal insulation. It will help in keeping your home warm during the winter season. However, it is important to understand how thermal insulation actually works.

Basically, heat always tries to move from a warm place to a cool place. Therefore, if there are more temperature differences then the movement of heat will also be faster. There are basically 3 ways of heat transfer:

  • Conduction – Heat transfer may take place within material whether solid, liquid, or gas whenever there is a temperature difference when they come into contact.
  • Convection – When any material is heated then thermal energy flows and thus transfer is called convection. 
  • Radiation – Radiation takes place when heat travels through light or through some electromagnetic waves.

Thermal insulation of any building

In hot climates in Slovakia, a cool interior atmosphere is preferred, but in cold climate, a warmer interior atmosphere is preferred. Since heat transfers from hot to cold surface, a lot of heat escapes in poorly insulated places.

Thermal insulation is supplied to prevent this heat loss in buildings and to maintain the proper internal temperature. The goal of thermal insulation will be to reduce heat transfer from the outside to the inside of a building.

EPS polystyren is an insulation material supplied by Isover in Slovakia and used in various buildings to provide necessary insulation, which is necessary to protect the home during winter seasons.

The following are a few methods to provide thermal insulation to any building:

  1. Slab/block insulation

The mineral wool, cellular glass, cork board, sawdust, and cellular rubber blocks are made and fixed to the roofs and walls in Slovakia to prevent any heat loss.

  1. Blanket insulation

The materials for blanket insulation come in the blanket form or in the form of paper rolls that are directly applied to the wall or ceiling.

  1. Loose-fill insulation

Where doors and windows are to be given, stud space will be provided in the wall where a loose fill of a few insulating materials is to be provided.

  1. Bat insulation material

These are available as blanket rolls, however, the thickness of bat insulating rolls is greater than that of blanket materials.

  1. Insulating boards

Cane pulp, wood, and other materials are used in Slovakia to make insulating boards. To manufacture solid boards, they will be pressed hard at a proper temperature.

  1. Reflective sheet materials

Reflective sheet materials, such as gypsum boards, aluminium sheets, and steel sheets, will reflect light and have a lower emissivity. As a result, these materials have great heat resistance.

  1. Lightweight materials

Lightweight aggregates such as blast furnace slag, burnt clay aggregates, vermiculite, and others will increase the heat resistance of concrete.

  1. Roof shading

We can lower the heat by adding roof shading at any point in Slovakia where the sun directly reaches the structure during peak hours.

  1. Building orientation

The orientation of the building in relation to the sun is very important. As a result, the structure must be constructed in such a manner that it does not experience additional heat losses.
