Dua Lipa was born in Westminster, London, on August 22, 1995. She was born a few years after her parents decided to immigrate from Pristina, FR Yugoslavia, to ensure a better life for themselves and their future children.

As for her family background, Dua was born into an Albanian family and had British citizenship because she was born in London. Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, was a lead singer in a band named Oda, where they lived in Kosova. He also worked as a marketing manager in a leading firm in London.

Dua’s mother, Anesa Lipa, worked in the tourism sector to support her husband and ensure their family had a comfortable life in an expensive city like London. Surprisingly, Dua started attending the Sylvia Young Theater School initially, but when Dua’s father landed a job back home in Kosova, the entire family relocated again.

Dua attended the Third Millennium School in Pristina during that time and was inspired by the music and pop artists there. Being in Kosova, Dua also learned the Albanian language there and sharpened her speaking skills.

When Dua turned 15, their entire family had decided to move back to London. Dua completed her A-levels and attended Parliament High School in London. Given her passion for theatre and music, Dua again enrolled in Sylvia Young Theatre School on the side.

Career

Dua’s father was already in a band during his former years, so Dua was consistently surrounded by music. Her father’s passion for music pushed her to pursue a career in the same.

By the time she turned 11, Dua was already writing, singing, and recording different songs at home. Reports suggest that Dua encouraged her parents to return to London because she wanted to make it big with her music.

With her innate passion, Dua knew that she had a lot to prove. Instead of slacking, Dua started recording covers of popular songs and posted them on YouTube for the world to see. On the side, Dua was also working as a waitress to save money.

Dua also applied to become a model with ASOS Marketplace during that time. Although modeling wasn’t her passion, she decided to give it a try to try and network with people who would be able to help her launch her music career.

Later, in 2013, Dua appeared in a commercial for “The X Factor” and later signed a contract with Tap Management. They encouraged her to shift her focus solely on music and recording in exchange for a monthly salary. Dua agreed to the contract.

While being signed with Tap Management, Dua co-wrote a song titled “Hotter than Hell,” which ended up being the song that would change her life. When scouts from Warner Music Group heard the song, they signed her to the label in 2015.

After becoming a signed artist, Dua released the first song, “New Love,” in 2015. Subsequently, she released a few more singles, some charted in a few countries, putting her on the map.

Seeing the positive response from her fans, Dua announced her first tour in 2016, where she toured the UK and Europe.

Dua Lipa’s debut album in 2017, aptly titled “Dua Lipa,” propelled her into the mainstream with hits like “New Rules” and “IDGAF.” Her infectious blend of pop, disco, and R&B garnered critical acclaim and commercial success.

However, her sophomore album, “Future Nostalgia,” released in 2020, truly catapulted her to global stardom. The critically acclaimed album, a vibrant homage to 80s pop and disco, spawned chart-topping hits like “Don’t Start Now,” “Levitating,” and “Physical.”

The song “Future Nostalgia” also won her the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2021. Dua has won multiple accolades, including six Brit awards and three Grammy awards for her songs and albums.
