Surya Kumar Yadav – Early Life
Surya was born to a prosperous Hindu family on September 14, 1990, in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Growing up, he was not only backed by his parents, but he also had the support of his siblings, who pushed him to pursue his dreams.
His father, Mr. Ashok Kumar Yadav, worked as an electrical engineer at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), and his mother, Mrs. Swapna Yadav, was a stay-at-home mother and housewife who dedicated herself to the upbringing of her children.
Their entire family’s origin is from Banaras, Uttar Pradesh. However, due to Surya’s father’s job, he relocated to Mumbai, where the whole family is now based. Surya has a younger sister, Dinal Yadav, who shares a very close bond.
Regarding his education, Surya completed high school at Atomic Energy Central School, Mumbai, and later enrolled in Pillai College of Arts, Commerce, and Science, Mumbai, to finish his bachelor’s degree.
From an early age, Surya was interested in exploring a career in sports when he took up cricket and badminton at the age of 10. He dabbled in both for some time but eventually settled on cricket because he found the sport more enjoyable.
Seeing his enthusiasm, Surya’s father enrolled him in a cricket camp at the BARC colony, and he started training under his coach, Ashok Kamat. After being in the initial cricket camp, Surya began training at the Elf Vengsarkar Academy.

Surya is married to his college sweetheart, Devisha Shetty. The two met in 2012 while pursuing their degrees and hit it off immediately.
After being acquainted with each other for some time, they started dating. Surya was pursuing his training while the two were dating during their college days. Rumors suggest that Devisha was quite impressed with Surya’s skills.
Following their courtship for four years, they decided to get engaged in May 2016 and married in July 2016. They have been together since then.

Domestic Cricket Career
With the kind of potential that Surya showcased during his training, it didn’t take his coaches a long time to realize how good of a player he was. After training at Elf Vengsarkar Academy for some time, Surya started playing for the Parsi Gymkhana Cricket Club in Mumbai.
That was the start of his domestic cricket career. This was relatively early in his career when he played for the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. He has also been part of the Shivaji Park Gymkhana and Dadar Union Club team.
However, things improved when Surya was appointed to play for Mumbai’s state cricket team, where he scored 73 runs against Delhi during his debut match. Seeing his prowess on the field, it didn’t take Surya to land his place in the Ranji Trophy tournament in 2011-12. During that debut match, he scored a double century, beating Odisha.
Things soon went downhill when Surya was stripped of the captaincy and was let go from the Mumbai cricket team in 2014-15. He later switched to play for India C’s squad at the Deodhar League.
Indian Premier League (IPL)
While pursuing a career in the Ranji Trophy leagues, Surya Kumar Yadav also managed to get picked up for IPL during the auctions by Mumbai Indians. He played a match in 2012 for the team, but with big and experienced players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma in the team, his presence was pushed to the side.
Later, in the 2014 IPL auctions, Kolkata Knight Riders acquired Surya Kumar, and in 2015, he played a match against Mumbai Indians, where his score of 46 runs against 20 balls brought him a lot of recognition and praise.
Seeing his potential, during the 2018 IPL auctions, Surya Kumar was again acquired by Mumbai Indians for a whopping Rs. 3.2 crore. In the 2022 IPL auctions, Surya was again retained by the Mumbai Indians team for Rs. 8 crores. However, he had to stop playing in the 2022 IPL matches after he sustained an injury.

Besides the national and IPL teams, Surya Kumar Yadav has recently been in the news for being appointed captain of the Indian team for the T20I matches.
However, his debut in this tournament happened in 2021 when the team played against England at the famous Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He left the fans in the stadium screaming when he hit the first six after the first ball and scored a 50 in the match.
